Liturgy for Blue Christmas

This liturgy, as used at Unity Lutheran Church, Brookfield, WI, on Sunday, December 8, 2019, is a patchwork of a variety of sources:

  • The printed introduction, opening dialogue, and prayer after communion are drawn from Sundays and Seasons and Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
  • The thanksgiving at the table and invitation to communion were written specifically for this liturgy by the Rev. Josh Evans.
  • Additional elements are drawn from past Blue Christmas/Longest Night liturgies from Augustana Lutheran Church, Omaha, NE (prayer of the day) and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Orange, CA (lighting the Advent wreath).

The full worship folder is available here.

I hope you find these resources meaningful, particularly as you plan your own Blue Christmas or Longest Night liturgy. You are most welcome to re-use any of these worship texts with attribution and, in the case of copyrighted material, proper licensing.
